Pharmacy needle exchange delivery models: getting the mix right
Claire Shepherd, Pharmacy Coordinator, Leeds PCT
Biography
I am delighted to be asked to this conference to share our highly successful user designed and focused pharmacy needles exchange model.
I have worked in health and social care since the 1980’s, specialising in domestic violence, homelessness and drug use. As Pharmacy and Projects Manager for Leeds Primary Care Trust, I have worked with commissioners, Local Pharmaceutical Committee, specialist harm reduction services and drug users to develop high quality cost effective drug services in pharmacy. These have included supervised consumption and minor ailments schemes, supplementary prescribing, screenings and referrals and needle exchange.
In 2006/7, the unique user designed Leeds pharmacy needle exchange model has resulted in an increase in uptake by drug injectors from 500 people per ¼ to over 1600. It has also attracted over 30 new applications from contractors to provide the service and has satisfied commissioner’s requirements through its quality, cost effectiveness and monitoring capacity. Finally, it has been shortlisted for a national patient centre care award within health.
