Insulin use by body-builders
William Llewelyn, USA, Author of the body-builders bible ‘Anabolics 2007’
Abstract
Presentation will focus on the self-administration of insulin by bodybuilders and other users of performance- and image-enhancing drugs. It will open with a discussion on the biological action of insulin, particularly the ability of insulin to be used to improve protein synthesis rates, prevent protein catabolism (breakdown), partition nutrients to skeletal muscle tissue, and increase glycogen storage in muscles - all proving to be potent abilities for improving physical appearance and/or athletic performance. Also covered will be the common protocols of insulin use by athletes and bodybuilders, including the different insulin preparations, relative common dosages, and the timing of insulin administration during the post-training enhanced-absorptive window. The discussion will also include coverage of the health risks associated with the misuse of insulin, which may include hypoglycemia, coma, or death. Presentation will close with a number of strategies for harm reduction with users, mainly focused on educating the user of the risks associated with the drug, the unique effects or various forms of the drug, and the heightened dangers that can come with misjudging your insulin preparation, dosage, and/or carbohydrate intake.
