Using film to communicate key overdose messages. ‘Overdose - A retrospective’, 'OD training - user's cut’ and 'Mr Mange goes over'
Jon Derricott, Exchange Supplies
Abstract
Drug related deaths remain a major cause of concern. Many of these deaths are caused by overdose and are avoidable, either through actions taken to prevent them happening in the first place, or through prompt and appropriate action once an overdose has occurred. Over recent years, there has been an increase in the number and availability of relatively low-budget films that attempt to communicate key overdose messages.
Using three short films as examples (one produced as a local resource by Nottingham Health Shop, and two produced as part of the Harm Reduction Works campaign for the NTA and Department of Health), this interactive session will explore:
- What works and what doesn’t
- The reasons behind the rise in the number & availability of film resources
- The opportunities and dangers that result from this.

Biography
I have been involved in the drugs field for almost twenty years in a variety of capacities, from drug worker, to writer to cameraman/director, with various ports of call in-between. Before drugs work, I was a nurse. My most recent major piece of work has been to play a pivotal role in the development & execution of the Harm Reduction Works campaign.
