A new synthesis for working in dual diagnosis treatment
Brendan Georgeson, Treatment Coordinator, Walsingham House, Bristol
Abstract
The Matrix Model is borne out of hard experience at the coal face of dual diagnosis treatment at a tier 4 service in Bristol. The most common experience was the ‘pillar to post’ that we are all familiar with. Then one day it occurred to us why don’t we invite the local CMHT in to see their client whilst they are in treatment for addiction! This then was the start of some great working relationships with the mental health services. From that initial invitation to “please have a 1:1 with your client here at the rehab” we went to having full blown CPA planning meetings and treatment planning with all stakeholders crammed in to the staff room. It has been a great success. I acknowledge that many other agencies and services have being doing this for years and was surprised that no one had formulized it as this kind of working did not fit in to the 3 accepted models. Thus the Matrix Model of Dual Diagnosis Treatment was born. The model is a simple evolution and practical response to treatment options in England in 2007.
Serial Model: different staff in different services at different times (hence sequential)
Parallel Model: different staff in different services at same time (hence parallel)
Integrated Model: same staff in same service at the same time (hence integrated)
Matrix Model: different staff same service same time (hence matrix)
