Length: 20 minutes
Drug treatment for opioid dependence is poorly marketed. Research amongst hundreds of opioid dependent clients in treatment identified myths and misinformation about treatment and a lack of understanding about how prescribers determine treatment provision for injecting drug users. Through consultation with user organisations across Australia easy to use resources that make treatment transparent were developed. The aim of this DVD is to develop a resource for both in and out of treatment drug users (especially heroin users) that will assist them in accessing treatment by ensuring they are accurately and fully informed about; available treatment options; the process of treatment; its benefits; side effects and, possible risks. It aims to explain treatment options for upload dependence including methadone and buprenorphine and the treatment of other drug related problems and health issues such as dental care, hepatitis, mental health, and overdose. The DVD may also be used as an aid to teaching clinical students.
