Education & empathy, not tea and sympathy
Keely Glithero, Centre Manager and Yvonne Bryant and Pat Lambert, The Xchange, Surrey and Lisette Abrahams, Surrey Harm Reduction Outreach Team
Abstract
The Development & Implementation of a Successful Parent/Carer Support Group in Surrey
The Surrey Harm Reduction Team in Surrey began a Parent/ Carer Support Group in March 2007. It continues to go from strength to strength. The facilitators believe it works because it offers something unique: a safe confidential environment in which attendees can access peer support, balanced with educational sessions and guest speakers.
Providing the group members with a diverse range of harm reduction information sessions enables them to gain understanding, but also empowers them to make change.
This presentation explains how the group structure and content was devised, and explores why it continues to flourish. It also looks at future service development for Parent/ Carers.
Delegates will have the opportunity to ask questions of the group's facilitators and representative group members.
