Politics and drug policy - an unhealthy alliance?

Abstract
In an interactive session, Sara will explore the relationships between politics and policy over the past ten years of the drug strategy and look ahead to the potential influences and challenges ahead. In particular we'll look at the dominance of the disease model in current implementation, the relationship of this to the expansion of coercive treatment and what this might mean for the implementation of a social process oriented drug strategy.

Biography
Sara McGrail has worked in drugs services and policy for most of her career. Currently she is delivering work looking at relationships between central and local government, communities and service provider and at the effectiveness of current approaches and policy. She also has a strong interest in the impact of mainstream social policy on people affected by substance misuse and the routes back to financial and social inclusion for the most vulnerable communities. Sara is the author of numerous publications and articles and is one of the main creators of the National Guide to the Drug Strategy and The Goodenough Drug Strategies.
