The supply of free injecting equipment to injecting drug users has been a huge public health success: by starting needle exchange schemes shortly after the discovery of HIV we have, thus far, prevented an HIV epidemic in the UK.
Hepatitis C was already endemic amongst injectors when needle exchange was implemented, and prevalence (the number of injectors with the virus) and incidence (the number of injectors catching the virus) have remained high.
We publish accurate and accessible information to inform drug workers and drug users about risks. We also supply a range of equipment and resources that encourage more injecting drug users to use needle exchanges more often, and to discourage re-use and sharing of those items that can result in the transmission of HIV and Hepatitis C.
