Practice notes
Effective cleaning of the skin and hands lowers the the amount of bacteria that can be transferred into the underlying tissues at the injecting site. Doing this for each injection means that soft tissue infections as a result of injecting will occur much less frequently.
Clients should be advised to squeeze the contents of the sachet onto the hands and injecting site, taking particular care that all areas of the hands are covered including palms, back of the hand and between fingers. If possible fingernails should be kept short and cleaned regularly.
The gel should then be allowed to dry. For an explanation as to why, click here.
There is no need to rinse with water, and the alcohol on the skin surface will remain for a short time and help retain cleanliness.
If time and circumstances allow, it may be helpful to provide a quick practical demonstration of skin cleaning.
Giving out skin cleaner gives a ideal opportunity to discuss injecting hygiene in general. A particular emphasis should be placed on discouraging people from touching or licking the needle prior to injection, because doing this vastly increases the amount of bacteria on the needle and the chances of developing an infection.
