Low dead space syringes for detachable needles have a 'displacement spike' on the end of the plunger which goes down into the void ('dead space') at the end of the syringe that the luer slip needle attaches to.
Originally developed to reduce wastage of expensive medicines, they are already extensively used for injecting expensive drugs like human growth hormone, and botox, but they also have an important impact when distributed to injecting drug users because the low 'dead space' means that the dose of infected blood that they can contain is massively reduced, which means they can significantly reduce blood borne virus transmission risk.
