Promoting and developing pharmacy needle exchange
This course is intended for pharmacy needle exchange co-ordinators and drug workers working within agencies that want to promote, support and develop pharmacy needle exchange.
The course will help to develop pharmacy needle exchange networks and cover the evidence base, best practice, support and training needs of pharmacy staff, and responding effectively to difficulties and problems.
Learning objectives
Completing this course will enabe you to:
- Describe the research evidence that supports the provision of needle exchange to injecting drug users;
- Describe the benefits of and limits to pharmacy based needle exchange within overall strategies to reduce Blood-borne viruses;
- Summarise best practice in recruiting, setting up and providing pharmacy based needle exchange;
- Understand the support and training needs of pharmacists and pharmacy staff with respect to needle exchange;
- Identify best-practice in responding to difficulties and managing problems within pharmacy based needle exchange; and
- Reflect on local data collection methods and consider ways in which data can be effectively utilised.
