Wound care with injecting drug users
Understanding, and offering good advice about and treatment for the increasing number of wounds, infections and ulcers suffered by injecting drug users is becoming an ever-more important part of the work of drug services.
This one-day course will enable participants to understand what causes the skin to break down, assess minor wounds caused by injecting and identify potentially serious problems. The afternoon sessions will be practically focussed, aiming to consolidate the morning session and enable participants to become familiar with the different treatment options, including wound dressings.
Learning objectives:
- Understand the function of the skin and mechanisms to preserve integrity;
- Be able to assess injecting sites;
- Be able to differentiate between infected and non-infected wounds; and
- Understand different treatment options.
