Low dead space syringes for detachable needles have a displacement spike on the end of the plunger which goes down into the void (dead space) at the end of the syringe that the luer slip needle attaches to.
Originally developed to reduce wastage of expensive medicines, they are already extensively used for injecting expensive drugs like human growth hormone, and botox.
The dead space in a standard luer slip syringe has been measured by Dr Bill Zule at RTI International and found to average 98µl (microlitres). We sent the LDS colour to his laboratory to have the dead space measured and they found that the displacement spike reduces the dead space by around half to 41µl.
This is still significantly more than the dead space in an insulin type low dead space syringes such as the nevershare 1ml fixed needle syringe (typically just 3µl) - but LDS syringes are likely to reduce the risk of blood borne virus infection over standard 1ml High Dead Space Syringes because the reduced dead space means that the dose of infected blood that they can contain is less, especially if the syringe has been rinsed between uses.
