Designed to work alongside traditional needle and syringe exchange channels, NSPdirect offers commissioners, and drug services the means to enable people who inject drugs in their area to directly access equipment via a postal needle and syringe service, online, setting up an account with a voucher code.

NSPdirect enables services to offer postal needle and syringe availability as a component of the needle and syringe programme to increase coverage, and reach.

How does it work?
When your area or service joins the scheme, Exchange Supplies will create a set of secure activation codes that are unique to your scheme. The codes can be distributed, by local services, to those people who inject drugs, that want to be able to set up an online account on exchangesupplies.org to order equipment.

The commissioner will have complete control of the parameters that govern the account, including:

• Postcode areas that equipment can be delivered to;
  

• Products that can be supplied;
  

• Maximum order value; and
  

• Time before voucher needs to be renewed by the client re-confirming / updating their demographic details.
  

So that activity data reporting from NSPdirect can be harmonised with current datasets, the account creation process will ask for customisable demographic data such as:

• Gender;
  

• Date of birth; and
  

• Drug(s) of choice.
  

The client will be encouraged to provide positive consent for that data to be shared with the commissioner / service provider during registration, and — as with all UK needle exchanges — they will have the option to use the service anonymously, without any of their personal data being reported with the transaction data. All data transfer to / from the Exchange Supplies website is encrypted, and all personal data is securely stored in the UK.

Once logged in, the client will be taken to the page listing the products available for free delivery, which will be formatted like this (click to view), and the 'price' will be listed 'Free'.

This product list would normally be the products currently available via the existing pharmacy needle and syringe programme, plus if required, additional products such as Naloxone.

For ease of repeat ordering, client account holders once logged in, will be able to see their personal order history, select favourites, and repeat previous orders.

Exchange Supplies will provide full transaction reports, with data that will be at least equivalent to current pharmacy NSP data collection.

All NSPdirect orders will be billed monthly, on a separate consolidated invoice, listing full details of all transactions with client address redacted to protect confidentiality (we will provide order number and first 3 digits of postcode so that a full audit is possible).

How much does it cost?
We anticipate that NSPdirect provision will cost the same as, or less than, pharmacy needle and syringe provision. Equipment will be supplied through NSPdirect at your current competitive prices. There is no annual retention or licence fee, nor any per-transaction costs. The only additional costs will be a reduced carriage charge of £3+VAT for orders placed by clients, for equipment with a net value of less than £25.

Future developments
NSPdirect has been developed in response to the COVID19 pandemic, and is live with the feature set above. We plan to add additional features including:

• The ability for clients to pay separately for additional harm reduction items to be included in their order;
  

• Automatic upload of transaction data to recording systems such as NEO;
  

• Customisable registration dataset fields; and
  

• A subscription service, in which clients can set periodic deliveries, fully customisable with pause, bring forward, and stop options, offered by email prior to dispatch;
  

• Encouragement to allow us to share email addresses with local service providers, to facilitate targeted messaging; and
  

• Additional customisable information to be added to landing pages, and confirmation emails.
