Medical use
1ml luer slip syringe barrel is used in medical practice where small amounts of a drug or substance need to be administered to the tissues or veins.

Non-medical use
This 1ml syringe barrel is also suitable for veterinary use.
For the injection of illicit drugs, fixed needle syringes (such as the nevershare syringe) have the advantage that they have little or no 'dead space' which can remain filled with blood after the injection. For all luer slip needles – such as this one – this 'dead space' greatly increases risk if the syringe is shared.

However, in In any situation where people who inject cannot easily access veins, and is making multiple attempts to find a vein with a fixed needle syringe it may be feasible and desirable to switch to the use of a 1ml barrel with an appropriate size needle because the needle can be switched more easily if it gets blunted.

Cautions / Harm Reduction Advice
The use of a 1ml barrel with an appropriate-sized needle can lead to injecting with reduced risk of vein damage. It allows the injector to ‘draw up’ through barrel, rather than the needle. This can ensure that the needle is sharp and sterile at the time of injection.

By ensuring that the injector has the most appropriate needle to the site that they are using and the drug in question, site and vein damage can be reduced.

However, the use of 1ml barrels with separate needles can introduce new problems. There is a risk that barrels may get reused or shared with only the needle getting changed. Advice about reuse of equipment and sharing should always be offered, and extra care should be taken to ensure that injectors are given enough barrels to allow single use, and (if necessary) more needles than barrels to allow the needles to be changed.

The three part syringe also leaves a void space at the end of the syringe which will retain a mixture of drug solution and blood.

The fact that the 'void volume' of the syringe retains more drug may increase the chances of the injector drawing blood back in to the syringe (flushing), which increases strain on the vein. As a larger volume of blood is retained, the risk of BBV transmission if the syringe is shared is greater. All injectors should know
