Introduction
This is an online version of the 5th edition of the UK version of The
Safer Injecting Handbook, which is available free from many drug services
in the UK. Copies of the handbook can be purchased directly from Exchange
Supplies.
The Australian edition
is available from ADF.
This handbook is written
for people who are injecting drugs. It may also be of use to health
and other workers who want to advise injecting drug users on how to
reduce the risks of injecting.
There is no completely
safe way of injecting drugs. Injecting a drug (rather than smoking,
swallowing or sniffing it) carries a much greater risk of overdose,
vein damage and infection. The
information on this site is not here to teach you to inject if you are
not already doing it.
However, if you are
injecting, using the information may help you reduce the risks you are
taking. The safer injecting handbook was written for use in the UK,
while most of the information applies to injectors everywhere, if you
are not from the UK please be aware that information about drugs and
acidifiers etc. may not apply to you.
A website is no substitute
for talking things through - so if there is anything you are not sure
about, or if you have any problems, questions or worries, talk them
over with your drug worker, needle exchange worker or GP.
